GUITAR GREAT
CHUCK ALVAREZ
LIVE at The COACH HOUSE April 18, 2003

"Sexy, funky...a real crowd pleaser...Chuck's nimble lead guitar work leads songs into a frenzy...but he still plays out the heartache." Random Lengths - "Energetic...his life affirming themes reveal wisdom" Blues Revue

Great guitar playing is rarely joined with great songs. Come experience the monumental, Chuck Alvarez, and his guitar-based R & B Rock, where Johnny Winter meets Steve Winwood, with a twist of Mose Allison. Every now and then, a true talent gets overlooked - the music industry inner circle knows who they are, but the general public relies on chance to finally meet their new favorite. Of course, it doesn't help when the artist is a semi-reclusive, studio bound, rabid song writer that records in his California mountain hide-out. But in April, thirty-year guitar veteran and song writer, Chuck Alvarez brings his high energy, sweat induced, blues-based rock to the Coach House.

Make no mistake, his fan base is loyal, and strong. A native of San Pedro, California, Alvarez is a favorite to audiences from Vancouver, BC to San Diego. Also a composer, his most recent project, a dramatic theater piece, Responsibility, opened at LA Harbor College Main Stage Theater, celebrating David Lynch's work with children in the Tijuana dump, and caught not only the attention of Hollywood, but generated over $1,000,000 in contributions; not bad for a blues guy. Often hired as a side man, Alvarez toured extensively with Tim Weisberg from 1985 to 1994, David Benoit as a jazz guitarist, and two years as musical director/guitarist for Grammy winning, The Emotions. Then about ten years ago, he formed his own band. On tour or in the studio, Alvarez surrounds himself with music greats: Grammy award winning producer, Dave Swanson (Blues Traveler), engineer Walter New (Robben Ford & Eric Johnson), Mike Finnegan (Taj Mahal & CSNY), sax phenomena Vince Denham (Michael McDonald), B3 bad boy, Chris North (Ambrosia), Jeff Healy (sitting in live), or Michael McDonald (co-writing for potential feature film score), Alvarez's on-going performance is his life's music.

The guitar wizard's playing goes right to the gut, seducing us to bust out and move, while pulling our heart strings with meaningful lyrics. "Ultimately, it's the songs that last," says Alvarez. You can hear great ripping guitar, but what separates him from other virtuosos, is the quality of the songs. An early influence in Alvarez's writing was Bill Champlin & the Sons. As fate would have it, they share the stage April 18, when Alvarez opens for one of his inspirations. The Sons and Alvarez are known for fantastic live shows, so don't miss this special night! Chances are you, too, will add Alvarez to your list of favorites.

Chuck Alvarez will be appearing at The Coach House on Friday, April 18. The doors open at 6pm and the show starts at 8pm.
